Institute for Meditative Humanities Education officially opens on April 1st! Some may find this date unusual — why begin on April Fools' Day? In common imagination, April Fools' Day is a day for jokes and pranks. Could Institute for Meditative Humanities Education itself be a 'fool's errand'?

If we trace the cultural background of April Fools' Day, its origins are inconsistent, but it is often associated with spring festivals. In ancient Rome, there was a spring festival called Hilaria — meaning joy and merriment — a day of celebration in the Cybele–Attis cult, marking Attis's revival after mourning. Attis was a deity associated with spring, death, and rebirth in ancient Mediterranean religion, and so Hilaria marked a rhythm of turning from mourning toward revival, from loss toward renewal.

April Fools' Day is often associated with such spring festivals, as it too carries a sense of overturning the everyday and temporarily loosening order. The former turns from mourning to revival and celebration; the latter turns from daily order to jest, displacement, and subversion.

With this in mind, I would like to offer several layers of meaning through the word 'fool.' First, 'foolishness' reminds us to acknowledge our own ignorance and blindness — this is the starting point of meditation education. Second, its importance lies in its capacity to loosen our habitual ways of understanding. In Zhuangzi's philosophy, the fool is not enslaved by cleverness or confined by preconceptions — one who can still retain simplicity and openness. Third, the fool, though seemingly absurd, is often closer to truth — able to see what others cannot, and to say what others dare not. Shakespeare's Fool in King Lear is a prime example: through humor, irony, and absurdity, he speaks truths that no one else dares, revealing the king's blind spots and errors. So April Fools' Day is no Fools' Day at all! May we all have the courage to be true fools — and may every day be April Fools' Day!

On What Is Meditative Humanities

Meditative humanities integrates contemplative practice, koan inquiry, and critical reflection to cultivate awareness and responsive capacity amid contemporary conditions.

"Vimalakīrti" means "stainless," not as purity by exclusion, but as unclouded awareness amid complexity.

In this sense, "stainless" names a direction of learning: not escape from the world, but awareness within it.

From this view, the institute develops learning practices integrating meditation, education, and contemporary reflection.

Meditation and koan inquiry make "stainlessness" a trainable capacity, not an abstract ideal.

Contemporary education increasingly values self-understanding and reflection, yet often does not reach the deeper conditions of subject formation.

The institute intervenes in this gap by shifting learning from understanding to observing and loosening the conditions that generate the subject.

Contemporary life education has helped students understand that the self is formed through experience, relationship, and choice. Yet this understanding often remains at the level of narrative and values, without sufficiently analyzing formation mechanisms or methods for transforming habitual structures.

The institute contributes by theorizing and methodizing subject-formation: helping students see how the self is shaped by education, language, technology, capital, and social expectation, while developing the capacity to pause automatic reaction and respond anew.

Meditation is not only for relaxation, but for directly observing how experience, thought, and reaction arise.

Koan inquiry disrupts habitual frameworks and reveals hidden response patterns.

Meditation stabilizes awareness while koans create necessary rupture; together they open new ways of responding.
